Name on first page.

The editor states in his foreword that this is a handbook, giving an in-depth review of ketoconazole. Some 120 investigators in 20 countries are said to be represented in the scope of the work, much of which is published for the first time. The editor has been supported by an impressive editorial advisory group of international standing.
The book begins with a set of review articles, as follows: “Superficial and deep mycoses: the extent of the problem“; “Current therapy of mycotic diseases“; “The mode of action of antifungal drugs“; and “Introduction to antifungal imidazoles“. Each of these is written by a different author of international repute. These are intended to be introductory, but also provide useful source material on antifungal chemotherapy in general.
The chapters relating specifically to ketoconazole constitute 17 of the 21 chapters, and are the work of a single contributor. Each chapter describes the results of clinical trials of ketoconazole in the treatment of one disease type, and much of the material has been taken from the files at the Janssen Research Foundation and, as such, is presumably not available to the scientific community in any other form. Much use is made of summary tables in comparing results of several researches, each of which, where appropriate, is properly referenced. The full colour clinical illustrations are of excellent quality, and most of these are of the “before and after treatment” type. The text of these sections, however, is confusing, as it is sometimes difficult to be sure which of several trials is being discussed.
In general, the book is a valuable summary, but equally serves to illustrate how much more clinical experience is needed for each of the disease entities before the place of ketoconazole in the battery of antifungal drugs can be satisfactorily assessed.
